PT | 127 Forsake not this year's resolution Radio Apprentice

What should be an ideal new year’s resolution?

A new year’s resolution is a personal goal or commitment that one makes at the beginning of a new year. It is usually related to improving one’s health, habits, relationships, skills, or career. However, not all resolutions are equally effective or realistic. Some may be too vague, too ambitious, or too dependent on external factors. Therefore, it is important to choose a resolution that is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. These are also known as SMART goals.

An ideal new year’s resolution should be something that one is genuinely interested in and motivated to pursue. It should also be aligned with one’s values and priorities in life. For example, if one values fitness and wellness, a resolution could be to exercise for 30 minutes every day, or to eat more fruits and vegetables. If one values learning and growth, a resolution could be to read a book every month, or to take an online course on a topic of interest. If one values social and emotional well-being, a resolution could be to spend more quality time with family and friends, or to practice gratitude and mindfulness.

A new year’s resolution should also be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances. Sometimes, unexpected events or challenges may interfere with one’s plans or progress. Instead of giving up or feeling guilty, one should be able to adjust one’s resolution accordingly. For example, if one’s resolution is to travel more, but there is a pandemic or travel ban, one could explore local destinations or learn about different cultures online. If one’s resolution is to save more money, but there is an emergency or a loss of income, one could revise one’s budget or find alternative sources of income.

Finally, a new year’s resolution should be enjoyable and rewarding. One should celebrate one’s achievements and milestones along the way, no matter how big or small. One should also seek support and feedback from others who share similar goals or who can offer encouragement and advice. A new year’s resolution should not be a source of stress or pressure, but rather an opportunity to grow and improve oneself.
